August 2019 – Kearns Rotolo Law Supports Township’s New K-9 Unit
As a former police officer, I understand the dangers of the job. That’s why when the opportunity to help the township’s Police Department acquire a K-9 officer came around, my Firm was happy to contribute.
“Kearns Rotolo Law is thankful for the opportunity to help defray the cost of training K-9 Tapko and his handler Sgt. John Tiger as the township’s new K-9 unit,” Victor said. “K-9 dogs help perform certain law enforcement tasks more effectively and protect their fellow officers. Their training can be costly, but the benefits a K-9 unit brings to the department are invaluable.”
K-9 dogs have been used in law enforcement since the Middle Ages and for good reason:
- They can search an area four times faster and with more accuracy than humans can;
- Their sense of smell is about 10,000 times more acute than a person’s, which aids in their detection abilities;
- Their keen senses alert them to danger long before humans can sense it which, in turn, reduces the risks to the dog’s fellow officers.
While K-9 dogs perform a multitude of services, individual dogs are trained for specific tasks: detection (arson, explosives, narcotics); tracking (lost persons, suspects, cadavers); crowd control; suspect detention. K-9 Tapko and Sgt. John Tiger trained for patrol and narcotics at the K-9 Academy in Bergen County, where they graduated this past May. Welcome aboard!
