June 2015 – It’s June — Time to Get Outdoors and Pitch a Tent

A couple hiking

Hunterdon County offers many beautiful, natural areas to enjoy and this is the perfect time of the year to do that since June has been dedicated both Great Outdoor Month and National Camping Month.

Camping is a great way to appreciate our natural resources. In fact, 11 years ago the National Wildlife Federation started the Great American Campout in an effort to encourage people to connect with nature. The event this year runs from June 27 through September 7 with the goal of promoting the protection of wildlife and natural resources.

In Clinton Township, we have easy access to several camping facilities designed to satisfy campers of all levels. Round Valley Campground, located right here, is one of the few State facilities offering backpack camping. None of the campground’s 85 campsites is accessible by vehicle; campers must hike, bike or boat across the reservoir to reach their campsite. With steep, rocky trails and primitive facilities, this campground is best for the experienced camper.

Less experienced campers or those with young children have other options just a short drive away:

  • Jugtown Mountain Campground, West Portal, features 150 campsites, half of which are reserved for RV camping;
  • Spruce Run Recreation Area, Union Township, offers 67 campsites accommodating both tents and trailers;
  • Voorhees State Park, Glen Gardner, has 47 campsites accommodating both tents and trailers, two group sites and three shelters.

Before dusting off your sleeping bag, familiarize yourself with what is and isn’t allowed when camping in New Jersey. A list of general camping rules can be found at http://www.state.nj.us/dep/parksandforests/parks/camprules.html. Check with your campsite for individual restrictions.

If all of this still sounds too rustic for you, consider pitching a tent in your own backyard for the Great American Backyard Campout on June 28! – Still a great way to experience nature and teach children about wildlife.
