N.J. Senate to Consider Relaxing Limits on Sex Abuse Lawsuits

“R.L.,” a 26-year-old man, who was allegedly sexually abused by his stepfather at the age of 10, has fought his way to the NJ Supreme Court to get his case heard. Victor Rotolo successfully represented R.L. in this case and now the legislature is poised to change the law as a result.

On Thursday, December 9, 2010 the New Jersey Senate will consider relaxing the limits on sex abuse lawsuits filed in the State of New Jersey. The bill that is before the NJ Senate continues to allow a victim of abuse the ability to sue his or her abuser or to sue a parent or a guardian if the parent or guardian knew about the sexual abuse and allowed the sexual abuse to occur. However, at present, a victim has only two years to sue once they become aware of the damage caused by the abuse. It is this statue of limitations that is being reviewed on Thursday. More…
